This is a shot of audio-visual installation I created with the help of Groj aka Kevin Jamey for CAMBAM’s Empty Sets art show. This shows only my computer screen at work, for an impression of the full action, read more…

As his electronic music alter ego Groj, Kevin Jamey creates music using sound samples, digital production techniques, and analog circuitry. Contrastingly, finished Groj productions achieve an organic quality, with strong melodic elements transcending the synthetic creation process. In this interactive audio-visual installation, this approach to musical creation is translated to visual content. A hand-written alphabet, representing a man-made code for abstract communication, is used to algorithmically resynthesize mystic natural imagery, a trademark of Groj’s visual identity. In this way, a seemingly organic sensual impression emerges from fundamentally artificial building blocks, a process relying heavily on a computer technology. A physical interface with push-buttons and faders allows the viewer/participant to influence the resynthesis process in real time in an unusually physical way. Ultimately, the visual resynthesis feeds forward to directing digitally emulated voices resemblant of a choir, thus completing the translation from original natural imagery into a fully synthetic, though organic visual and auditive experience.
